TB Testing (CA & MN only)

 

Service only available in California and Minnesota.

 

Patients must be able to return within 48 to 72 hours of their initial visit to have the tuberculin skin test (TST) assessed. Tests will not be administered if the patient cannot meet this requirement.

 

Insurance copays will not be accepted for this service.

 

Considerations for testing:

 

·         Close contact of someone with known or suspected active TB

·         Person with HIV infection or at risk for HIV infection

·         Immigration within the past 5 years from a country where there is a high incidence or prevalence of TB -- Asia, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Russia

·         Recent travel to area with high prevalence of TB

·         Residents or workers in highly congregated settings -- homeless shelters, correctional facilities, nursing homes, residential homes for persons who have HIV, and migrant-worker camps

·         Intravenous drug use

·         Healthcare workers

·         Microbiologists routinely exposed to mycobacteria

·         As required for employment or school entry

 
Referrals:

·         Previous serious reaction to previous dose of tuberculin purified protein derivative (Mantoux; PPD)

·         Previous positive skin test for tuberculosis (TB)

·         Previous disease or treatment for TB

·         Signs or symptoms of active TB

·         Live virus vaccinations (measles, mumps, rubella, oral polio, varicella, yellow fever, oral typhoid) in the previous month

·         Smallpox vaccination in the past month

·         Infection with measles, mumps, chickenpox, or influenza in the previous month

·         Febrile illness

·         Phenol hypersensitivity

·         Pregnant women who do not have a specific risk factor for TB

·         Patients with Hodgkin’s disease, sarcoidosis, immunosuppressive drug therapy, and immunodeficiency.
