Strep Throat (additional lab charges may apply)

Common Signs and Symptoms:
  • Sore throat
  • Fever above 101F
  • Swollen neck glands
  • Red throat/tonsils with white patches
  • Appetite loss
  • Headache or stomach pain can occur, mostly in children
  • Cough is typically not present

For accurate strep testing, please avoid food, drink, cigarettes, chewing gum and cough drops 15 minutes before your test.


Note: For most patients, a rapid test is done initially for results during the visit. If necessary, a 24-72-hour culture may be ordered (additional lab charges may apply).

Referrals:

Patients will be referred to primary care provider if:

  • Temperature over 103 degrees
  • More than four episodes in the last 12 months
  • Unable to swallow secretions or keep fluids down
  • Stiff neck
  • Respiratory distress
  • Have an immunocompromised condition
