Common Signs and Symptoms:
Pink or red skin that starts 2 to 4 hours after sun exposure
Pain or tenderness
Skin feels hot when touched
Blisters
Swelling of the skin
Occasionally, fever less than 100.5F
Referrals:
Patient will be referred to primary care provider if:
Fever is over 100.5F
Nausea and/or vomiting occur
Blisters contain pus
Blisters cover more than two inches of skin
Dehydration is present (headache, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, confusion)
Swelling of neck or face
Burns involve genital area
Burn is more than 10% total body surface area (TBSA) in an adult or more than 5% TBSA in children under age 5 and adults over age 65
Have an immunocompromised condition
